When in the most sensitive areas, C.L. Martin & Sons uses one of the oldest methods to break rock. First, holes are drilled in the appropriate places for the cut and type of rock. Second, Feathers & Wedges are placed in the holes. Finally, a sledgehammer is used to drive the wedge into the rock, effectively splitting it.

When a job is of significant size and has environmental restriction placed on it, expanding grout may be utilized to lessen the effects of noise, vibration & flyrock. The principle is the same as feathers & wedges, however larger cuts can be achieved. This process is often the most labor intensive and thereby the most expensive.
